Fifty-sixth Planting — March 7, 2026

On Saturday, March 7 2026, Trees for the Triangle and volunteers from Activate Good and Youth Volunteer Corps of the Greater Triangle planted an Eastern Redbud tree in honor of Erwin Herman Pepmeier (June 6, 1932 — September 16, 2025), grandfather of Trees for the Triangle staff member Jean-Luc Duvall. Affectionately called "Red" by his loved ones due to the strawberry blond hair of his youth, Erwin's memory is served well to be represented by a Redbud at the Cary Tree Archive. He would often regale Jean-Luc with stories of his childhood in Virginia where he helped his father fell great big trees that were floated down the river to the local lumber mill, but as faithful stewards to the land, the family was quick to replant the property, and have always been grateful to the lumber sale for alleviating pressures of the Great Depression.
