Tree planted as an addition to the roster of Liberty Trees that have symbolized the love of liberty of Americans throughout our history. The original Liberty Tree grew near Boston Common and served as a shaded meeting-site for colonists planning to overthrow the British. It was chopped down by a Loyalist in 1775. Many other American towns designated their own Liberty Trees, including Annapolis, whose 400-year-old tree survived the Revolution but not Hurricane Floyd, which knocked it down in 1999. |
